APPLICATIONS
Clean rooms and regulated environments
In clean rooms, avoiding contamination depends on irreproachable indoor air quality management. That’s why, for 45 years, Sauermann has been putting the best of its R&D expertise to work for these critical environments, which are subject to particularly stringent standards. Our aim, as always, is to manufacture the best products and to deliver an impeccable service to industry professionals.

Effective ventilation system management is essential in any sector where airborne particles such as dust, bacteria, viruses, micro-particles and aerosols can disrupt operations. At Sauermann, we work hand in hand with our partners in industries ranging from advanced electronics and pharmaceuticals to aviation, hospitals and biotechnology .

Sauermann harnesses the full breadth of its metrology expertise to help clean rooms adhere to stringent standards, from constant monitoring to ad hoc tests and everything in between: air flow balancing, calibration, and testing and repairing of measurement instruments for pressure, humidity, temperature, air velocity and air flow, co2 concentration and other parameters.

In clean rooms, monitoring and control measurements rely on extremely narrow margins, especially when it comes to differential pressure. Each room has to be kept slightly above or below the pressure outside in order to prevent the risk of atmospheric contamination. Sauermann’s instruments are designed to provide the measurement accuracy and resolution that these demanding applications require.

Air change rate is the speed at which all the air inside a room is replaced by the ventilation system. To calculate this rate (ACR), expressed per hour, the airflow rate of each inlet of the ventilation system is divided by the total volume of the room concerned.

Mathematically is expressed by this simple equation:
ACH = Q/V
ACH = number of air changes per hour
Q = air flow
V = space volume

The pressure differential between adjacent cleanrooms or clean zones of different cleanliness level should lie typically in the range of 5 Pa to 20 Pa, to allow doors to be opened and to avoid unintended cross-flows due to turbulence.

Air conditioning and ventilation
These days, managing indoor air is a key concern across many sectors and industries. Sauermann offers a wide range of measurement solutions – spanning all air quality parameters in every part of a building and its ventilation system – to help keep conditions perfect for occupants and manufactured and stored products alike.

VAC systems cover every part of the air supply, processing and distribution chain in buildings. That’s why Sauermann’s measurement instruments come in various fixed, stand-alone and portable versions, making them suitable for use at any point in the circuit: from the building management system (BMS) and air treatment units, to fans, pipes, filters, vents, diffusers and more.

Every type of building needs a properly managed ventilation and air conditioning system, whether it’s a factory, a warehouse, an office block or a residential property. For this reason, Sauermann’s instrument ranges, which are sold directly and through its distribution partners, are segmented to make it easier for professionals working in different sectors to choose the right products – from quick, easy-to-use instruments for homes and small-scale commercial properties, to higher-capacity instruments for more critical applications.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the vital role of VAC systems in buildings. Air change rate (ACR) has become a key parameter in healthy and safety policies, with recommendations setting a universal limit of 800 ppm of CO2 in order to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. Sauermann has a 45-year track record in measuring key parameters for calculating and monitoring air change rate and air filter fouling, and its instruments are widely used in critical buildings such as hospitals and other health-care settings.

A building’s ventilation system is responsible for managing both air flow dynamics (air velocity and flow rate) and air properties (temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration and pressure). Sauermann’s instruments measure all these parameters with a high degree of reliability and accuracy, backed by calibration certificates issued by specialist in-house laboratories.

Heating and combustion
Heating systems consist of a boiler, a furnace, or a heat pump to heat water, steam or air in a central location, such as a furnace room in a home or a mechanical room in a large building. Those systems also include the heat distribution part, whether it is a water circuit or a forced air system with fans & blowers.
In order to ensure that such a heating system is working safely and efficiently various functional checks, adjustments and measurements should be performed on heat pumps, gas-fired systems, oil and solid fuel systems, both during commissioning and at regular intervals.

These include flue gas analysis, differential pressure measurement, leak detection and tightness testing, flow temperature measurement, as well as ambient CO measurement. Also note that combustion analysis is important for engines and other combustion processes whose purpose is not to generate heat. It is required to measure their gas emissions for regulatory compliance reasons and efficiency assessments.

Combustion-based equipment, such as boilers, furnaces or internal combustion engines need to be tightly controlled with regards to environmental and energy regulations. They also have to ensure a perfectly optimized and efficient combustion process over time in order to consume less fuel.
Flue gas analysis with professional combustion analyzers from Sauermann helps make combustion processes more efficient and reduces emissions by optimizing the combustion reaction and processes.

Flue gases released during combustion contain O2, CO2, CO, NOx (oxides of nitrogen), other pollutant gases and soot particles among others. These pollute the environment, have a negative effect on the climate and create numerous health risks for human beings.

Smart building and comfort
Increasingly sophisticated smart buildings are being developed to improve efficiency, reduce costs and make life easier and healthier for residents and business owners alike.

A key element in the development of smart building is the ability to infuse a high degree of intelligence into managing Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). IAQ refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health, safety and comfort of building occupants.

As people spend roughly 90% of time indoors, indoor air quality plays a significant part in their general state of health. The indoor air in our homes, schools, offices and factories can be twice, or even up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. In recent decades, buildings became more and more airtight to be increasingly energy efficient.

This is why air ventilation has a critical role to play in renewing indoor ambient air to constantly remove all kinds of pollutants, most bio-organisms and some gases. CO2 concentration is nowadays one of the most important IAQ parameters to check, because it is the main indicator of the quality of the air renewal rate, called Air Change Rate (ACR).

Unlike VAC, IAQ focuses on the quality of the air inside a room in order to improve the well-being of its occupants. Comfort in terms of temperature, humidity (hygrometry) and even psychrometric parameters such as wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is an important part of IAQ. Sauermann is committed to ensuring the measurement of all these parameters.
All modern and modernized buildings are now equipped with a complete ventilation network to renew their indoor air, while managing at least its two main parameters: temperature and hygrometry.

This ventilation system is built around an air handling unit (AHU), which centralizes the equipment needed to circulate the air and regulate its parameters. This is where Sauermann's transmitters come into play . They will constantly monitor the quality of the air flowing out of the AHU. In addition to the exit of AHUs, the transmitters can also monitor air entering rooms inside the building. These stationary instruments ensure high reliability in continuous operation and high measuring accuracy. They transmit their measurements to a central computerized monitoring station to adjust airflow, or trigger alarms in the event of problems with the air supply parameters of the building's AHU.

Refrigeration and cold chain
Refrigeration is among the most essential industries worldwide: it stands at the very foundation of our food supply due to the importance of the cold chain, it is also at the basis of the production processes for countless sensitive and vital products, such as drugs, vaccines and other pharmaceuticals. Refrigeration is also at the crossroads of major concerns: food safety on a large scale, as well as the preservation of our environment.

That’s why manufacturers and operators of refrigerators and freezers face increasing demands on operational safety and environmental protection. Pressure, temperature, superheating and subcooling of a refrigeration system must be regularly checked to ensure it functions smoothly, safely and efficiently.

The extensive international standards and regulations on the tightness of refrigerant systems are continually being revised. As the most used refrigerants are greenhouse gases with high global warming potential (commonly known as GWP), the regulations are becoming stricter. That’s why every part of the cold chain must be frequently tested: production installations, refrigeration plants, freezers, refrigerators, refrigeration units, etc.

The two most important parameters for the maintenance of refrigeration systems are temperature and pressure, as they are the key to verifying the proper functioning of the cooling process.

The advent of digital technology means huge quality improvements when it comes to the adjustment of refrigeration systems or heat pumps. Digital manifolds provide high-precision temperature and pressure measurements, determine subcooling and superheating, but also enable reliable evacuation of the system through accurate vacuum measurement.
